Ready for a list of all the winter tips you didn't know you needed? These aren't your typical - how to unfreeze or draft-blocking tips...
OUTSIDE:
1. Spray your shovel with cooking or silicone spray before shoveling to keep the snow from sticking.
2. Make a car emergency kit: extra socks, a warm hat, gloves, scarf, and snow pants, a candle, matches and or a lighter, a flashlight, a warm blanket, phone charger, hand/foot warmers, bottle of water, and energy bars.
3. Pull the mulch, and dirt away from your siding. There should be at least a 6" gap with foundation showing between the siding and the ground to keep bugs from easily seeking the warmth of the home.
4. Melt ice with vinegar and Water. You can also use rubbing alcohol and even pickle juice in place of the vinegar. Use 3 parts water to 1 part of the above options.
INSIDE:
5. Line your fireplace with tinfoil for easy ash cleanup
6. After baking, leave the oven open to add heat to the home (do not do this while the oven is on)
7. Bubble wrap can be window insulation. Use a spray bottle of water to mist the window and then just press the bubble wrap onto the window!
8. Make sure all your fans are turning clockwise to push the hot air back down.
9. Lay down rugs on wood or tile floors
10. Use a hot water bottle to warm the bed before climbing in, then push it down by your feet to warm those toes!
11. Close all your curtains in the evening and open them on the sunny days!
12. Use an open pot to boil water on the stove to add heat and moisture to your home. Then, enjoy a nice cup of tea or hot chocolate
DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER:
13. Make shoe liners out of wool or a dollar store sun visor the size of your shoe inserts to keep your feet warmer
14. Use sandpaper on the bottom of flats to rough up the bottom for grip
15. 1 tbsp of vinegar in 1 cup of water will remove salt marks from shoes.
16. Layer up - Bottom layer should be wicking or 100% cotton, next layer should be for warmth - knitted sweater, finally - waterproofing with a coat or vest. Your head loses heat the fastest so start googling hairstyling with hats to keep warm and stay stylish all winter long!
17. Waterproof your favorite canvas shoes by rubbing white candle wax on them and using a blowdryer to melt the wax into the fabric.
18. Wear touch compatible gloves under your mittens so when you need to use your phone, your hands stay warm
BEAUTY:
19. Dryer sheets will remove static from hair
20. Use chapstick before bed to keep your lips protected for the evening dry air
21. Use the bathroom often. A full bladder will make you colder!
22. After a moisturizing hot bath, leave the water in the tub until it becomes room temperature. This will help heat the home and add much needed moisture to the dry, winter air.
